What is breathing?

Breathing is described as an alternating action of active inhaling air into the lungs followed by a passive exhalation of the air. During an inhalation our diaphragm and intercostal muscles will contract allowing the chest cavity to enlarge and draw air into the lungs. During an exhalation these muscles relax and air is forced out of the lungs.

Healthy breathing is an involuntary action which gets adjusted automatically by the body to maintain a normal gas exchange. The coordination of ventilation occurs in our ‘breathing control centre’ (medulla and pons of the brainstem) sending a constant supply of information to make fine adjustments to maintain adequate ventilation.

Feel Good Day

Friday, 23rd October is the annual event Feel Good Day organised by the Wilson Home Trust for mothers of children with disabilities.  The Wilson Home is assisting children and their families during difficult times at their beautiful facility in Takapuna.

Shore Natura Health was invited to participate at the Feel Good Day to offer Reiki sessions to Mums staying at the Wilson Home. We understand that a mother never puts herself first if her child is sick and in need of support and help. As a result Mums often will feel drained and fatigue will set in as they try to deal with the daily emotions and challenges.

Shore Natura Health is looking forward to be part of a team of volunteers to bring relaxation through different modalities and to make this a memorable day for all the Mums staying at the Wilson Home Trust.

It is vital for our health and wellbeing that we get a good night sleep. The quality of our sleep during the night will reflect in the quality of our day. A restful sleep will leave us refreshed and ready for the day ahead of us but if we struggle through the night we will be feeling exhausted, tired and be in a bad mood.

If you don’t sleep well, you can’t perform well.  As a result you might have trouble concentrating on your work, mistakes are creeping in, memory loss shows or you make bad decisions when driving the car.

What is Hyperventilation?

A medical dictionary* gives the following definition: Hyperventilation - breathing at an abnormally rapid rate at rest. This causes a reduction of the carbon dioxide concentration of arterial blood, leading to dizziness, tingling in the lips and limbs, tetanic cramps in the hands and tightness across the chest.

If continued, hyperventilation may cause loss of consciousness. This sequence of events occurs in the hyperventilation syndrome (HVS).  *Concise Medical Dictionary

Contact Shore Natura Health if you suffer from Hyperventilation / over-breathing. We offer specific breathing courses (Buetyko Method) which will help and support you to reset your breathing parameters to a healthy level.
