Good sleep is a reachable dream

March 18th is World Sleep Day which is a global annually event. This year’s slogan is “Good sleep is a reachable dream”. How true!

We like to remind everyone how vital it is for our health and wellbeing that we get a good night sleep. The quality of our sleep during the night will reflect in the quality of our day.

A restful sleep will leave us refreshed and ready for the day ahead of us but if we struggle through the night we will be feeling exhausted, tired and be in a bad mood.

If you don’t sleep well, you can’t perform well.  As a result you might have trouble concentrating at work, mistakes are creeping in, memory loss shows or you make bad decisions when driving the car.

We all like to get a good night sleep but how many times do we toss and turn. It might take us forever falling asleep. We are checking the clock and only minutes have past, we check again and it is now 30 minutes and still no sign that the wait will be over soon.

Our brain is working overtime by producing thoughts which happily circle around in our mind and are adding to our sleep problem.

Without seeing an end to our falling-asleep-issue [insomnia] we get nervous and stressed because we know the alarm will go off at the set time. When we are stressed we are engaging our sympathetic nervous system. It is like pushing the accelerator all the way down in a car and keeping us at high alert.

During danger it is very useful to be able to react quickly to a situation [run away or fight] but it doesn’t support us in the effort going to sleep. Have you noticed that during stress your breathing becomes heavier and deeper and you start to hyperventilate? Again heavy and uncontrolled breathing doesn’t help us to relax and improve our sleep problem.

To slow down we need to step on the break in our car which is the parasympathetic nervous system in our body. It calms and relaxes us. Breathing will become soft and gentle, our mind will relax and we can drift off to find our dream.

Breathing exercises give you a natural remedy to slow irregular breathing and to normalize breathing parameters. Slow breathing will activate the parasympathetic nervous system which will set you up for a good night sleep.

Be in control of your own breathing and learn the Buteyko method.
