Buteyko Breathing Courses for adults and children

Buteyko Breathing Method

The Buteyko Method is based on years of research in the field of dysfunctional breathing by Professor Buteyko, a Russian physician. He developed specific breathing exercises to reset and normalise breathing parameters like rhythm, volume, and breathing rate in a holistic way.

Retraining the breath aims at resetting the tolerance levels to carbon dioxide of our brain resulting in calmer and quieter breathing. This is achieved by some general rules and breathing exercises practiced and performed during the day. The breathing education programme is suitable for adults and children.

Are you breathing correctly?

Breathing is an automatic action and should hardly be noticed by yourself or others. It should be calm, quiet and rhythmic. If we are over-breathing (hyperventilating) our breathing changes and becomes rapid, noisy or irregular which can be noticed e.g. in asthma, panic/anxiety attacks, sleep disorders and snoring.

Can we get breathing wrong?

Our bodies require a certain gas composition to function correctly or illness and disease can occur.  When we over-breathe our inhalations and exhalations increase which has an effect on our metabolic system the same way as over-eating has. We all know that eating too much over a period of time will have an effect on our body and health, the same applies to breathing too much.

When we mouth breathe and over-breathe we are disturbing the natural balance between our oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood. If our carbon dioxide levels run low because of over-breathing it can cause constriction of airways and blood vessels. As a result, our brain, vital organs and cells will be deprived of oxygen leading to symptoms in the long run.

This MRI scan of the brain shows how over-breathing / hyperventilation affects the oxygen supply to the brain.

The brain to the left shows the highest oxygen levels in the yellow colour areas. To the right we see the result of low oxygen levels [reduced by 40 %] after one minute of hyperventilation reflecting in the darker blue colour.

Healthy breathing is nose breathing
Healthy breathing is calm and rhythmic
Healthy breathing is quiet

Are you over-breathing?

Have others pointed out to you the habits of mouth breathing, yawning, sighing, throat clearing, and irritable coughing? Those are signs of dysfunctional breathing effecting your wellbeing and health in the long run.

Maybe you are a noisy breather at night time and your snoring keeps others awake. Disruptive and unrestful sleep results in fatigue during the day.

We all have experienced the feeling of panic / anxiety at one point in our life when our breathing gets out of control and we start to over-breathe heavily.  Panic attacks leave our brain oxygen deprived as a result of over-breathing.

Learn the Buteyko breathing technique and have a 'tool' at hand to stop over-breathing and control your symptoms.
